A Day at the National Gallery of Art

A few weeks after vacation, I love taking time to really reflect on my time away. We were in Washington, D.C. almost two weeks ago and I really miss the city already! We are planning on a few more trips down in the coming months, but I still can’t help but to reflect on our recent visit.

One part of the trip I cannot stop thinking about was our day at the National Gallery of Art. This is without doubt one of my favorite museums and we are always sure to visit when we are in D.C. Something about art museums in general make me incredibly happy. They are just so elegant. Seeing priceless works of art in beautiful golden frames is such an elevated experience and I love to soak it in.

One of the featured exhibits at the National Gallery of Art while we were visiting was the “Clouds, Ice, and Bounty: The Lee and Juliet Folger Fund Collection of Seventeenth-Century Dutch and Flemish Paintings” and I was so excited to see the pieces. In general, I love stormy seascapes. They remind me of being in a Gothic tale, and I love that whole aesthetic.

There are a few other exhibits we always love checking out at the National Gallery. One of them is the “Masterpieces of American Furniture” selection. I have enjoyed this exhibit for years and, as corny as it sounds, it makes me feel like I am in Richard and Emily Gilmore’s home! (Haha, it’s true!) I love seeing the colonial pieces and imagining what these elevated American homes must have looked like inside.

Another collection group we love are the “Italian Gothic Paintings” and “Italian Altarpieces and Religious Sculptures.” Honestly, seeing these elevated and beautiful religious pieces feel like a divine experience for me. I think about all of the people who have pondered their faith throughout history while looking at these piece, and I feel like an active participant in that history.

We walked around most of the museum that day and I could go on for hours about spending time there. If you have the opportunity to visit, I highly recommend it!
