My Favorite Summer Movies

In my last post I talked about how it’s “officially” summertime. Okay, well, it’s not officially summertime until June 21st. Despite this, we’re still celebrating the upcoming season at my house. One of our favorite family activities and hobbies is watching movies together and we love seasonal favorites! Is it really autumn if Halloween isn’t playing? Is it really Christmastime if It’s a Wonderful Life isn’t playing? Not really, and summer is no different. Here are some of my favorite summer movies to celebrate the season:

Family Fun

There are some adult themes in these movies, but overall they are family films. The Great Outdoors is comedic gold and a film that actually makes me laugh out loud. I mean, I wouldn’t expect less from Dan Aykroyd and John Candy. Grown Ups is another hilarious movie (and the sequel is great, too). Adam Sandler’s core crew is another funny gang and it’s just all good feels.

Of course we need a Wes Anderson film on the list! Moonrise Kingdom is such a fun and beautiful movie. I absolutely love the aesthetics of this movie. (This might be a better movie for older kids in their teenage years, but nonetheless a family film.)

If I didn’t put at least one baseball film on the list, I am almost positive my husband would have been disappointed, haha! The Sandlot is a great coming of age film. I also love The Parent Trap! Nancy Meyers is a film genius.

Okay, Addams Family Values is another family fun movie, but it is kind of dark despite its comedy. This might actually be one of my favorite summer movies because I just find it so hilarious. Raul Julia’s performance as Gomez literally cracks me up!

Summer Horror

Of course I am going to talk about some horror movies that celebrate summer! Not only is horror my favorite genre, but there are some great horror movies that feature summer themes. (For more summer horror classics, check out this blog post!)

Friday the 13th is an absolute classic. What screams “summer” more than a camp in the woods, teenagers engaging in risky behavior, and a creepy lake with a urban legend attached to it? The only thing that might come close is JAWS! Nothing says “summer” quite like a shark attack on the Fourth of July.

Patriotic Classics

Speaking of the Fourth of July, America celebrates her birthday during the summertime and so should we!

Okay, I have to admit that I haven’t watched 1776 in years. It’s on my list this year.

However, I do love The Patriot and watch it whenever it’s on television. It’s just such a triumphant American movie and I really enjoy it, haha.
